Digital Sound System 80

Digital Sound System 80

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Digital Sound System 80, short DSS80, was a three-piece PC audio system co-developed by Microsoft and Philips. It debuted on the 1998 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E³) and is most likely the only speaker system ever released by the Microsoft Corporation. It also remains one of the very few featuring Philips' wOOx subwoofer technology.
The DSS80 speaker system
The DSS80 featured technological innovations in comparison with contemporary systems. For instance, it didn't require a sound card installed but actually featured its own integrated sound hardware which could be connected via USB and allowed digital quality playback, synchronized hardware and software volume controls, the use of a 10-band graphic equalizer and Microsoft Surround Sound.
To support computers without USB, and to enable users to take advantage of present high-end sound hardware, it additionally featured 3.5mm analog line-in.
It was possible to connect the system both ways to ensure highest compatibility with both analog and digital audio content.

[edit] Control Speaker Cable Wiring information

Plug pattern
The plug on the Microsoft DSS80 control satellite speaker ( right speaker ) is a Mini-DIN 4 [1] [2] plug. To say the connector is ADB (Apple desktop Bus) is incorrect, any ADB device plugged into this port would not operate and likewise if the DSS80 were plugged into a Mac ADB port it would not function. Therefore the only similarity is the Mini-DIN 4 connector type.
The pins on the DSS80 plug are connected to the following wires: with the index mark (labeled "B") at 12 o'clock, the pin at 2 o'clock connects to the black wire (speaker ground); the pin at 4 o'clock connects to the red wire (speaker hot); the pin at 8 o'clock connects to the yellow wire; the pin at 10 o'clock connects to the blue wire; and the ground sheath connects to the white wire. If you bypass the plug and wire the cable directly to the subwoofer, remember to mirror these connections.
The subwoofer and satellite speaker are both held together with Torx #10 screws

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT
Round out your C4 Commander with this Mackie product:

Knob-Based Control for Your MIDI Hardware and Software.
Mackie C4 Commander software brings the world of our ultra-hip C4 Pro rotary control surfaces to your new or vintage MIDI hardware—opening up control possibilities once buried in layers of hard to navigate menus. Finally, keyboardists can adjust all the parameters of their favorite synths and sound modules, guitarists can tweak their guitar processors, and audio engineers can unleash the power of their rackmount reverbs, delays and MIDI modules, without ever leaving the mixing and creating monitoring "sweet spot."
Using an intuitive drag-and-drop visual interface, Mackie C4 Commander allows users to map parameters of popular MIDI hardware devices to the V-pots and scribble strips of the C4 Pro, for remote hands-on control and comprehensive visual feedback. An expansive array of instrument profiles is included, and custom layouts are easily constructed. You can even map parameters of different devices to a single C4 page for an incredibly wicked live performance controller. The level of hardcore "tweakability" is limited merely by having only 10 fingers and 24 hours in a day.

SWEET, GLORIOUS FREEDOM
Imagine being able to adjust complex parameters on your MIDI capable digital reverb (which sits in a rack on the other side of the room), without ever leaving the comfort of your chair. You'd need really long arms! That's what C4 Commander gives you, in essence—really long arms. Never having to leave your chair means never having to leave the "sweet spot." You'll be able to hear how changes affect your work immediately, without the hassle of running back and forth across the room.

NAVIGATION IS A BREEZE
Some externally controllable devices (instruments and effects) can be managed with less than 32 controls, which we refer to as "V-Pots." In this case you can access all parameters on a single C4 page. For those devices with a wider range of options, you simply add more pages. When you need to adjust a V-Pot on page three, just "turn the page" using the Page L or Page R buttons until you find the parameter you're looking for. You can even use the Split function to access multiple instruments on the same page, mapping only routinely adjusted parameters for each device to a single C4 page.
STORE YOUR OWN PROFILES
C4 Commander deals with two types of files: Instrument Definition Files and Layouts. Instrument Definition Files contain the parameters that allow C4 Commander to communicate with a particular instrument. Layout files allow you to place controls in a specific order and to re-label control text. After you've tweaked your heart out and built the "perfect" sound, hit the "Save" or "Save As" buttons and you are done—it's just that simple. Now you're well on the way to building a custom C4 Commander library—and the files are small enough to share with your friends via email.

Mackie

Dolby for the Masses
Mackie is proud to introduce a powerful expansion option for the TT24 Digital Live Console — the LP48 Loudspeaker Processor Card. This card greatly enhances the TT24 by adding Dolby Laboratories speaker and EQ processing to the TT24's already generous DSP capabilities. Designed by Dolby Laboratories, the people behind the acclaimed Dolby® Lake® Processor, the LP48 gives the TT24 Dolby's popular Ideal Graphic EQ™, Mesa Parametric EQ™ filter, and 4x8 loudspeaker processor which supports 2-, 3- and 4-way crossovers with delay and limiting. The Dolby Lake Controller interface seamlessly integrates with PC-based TT Control Software, so you can keep your eyes and ears dialed into the mix.

User-Configurable Processing
The LP48 offers three modes of operation that allow you to allocate the card’s available DSP resources per the demands of your current application.

EQ MODE: 10 insertable EQ modules
SPLIT MODE: 5 EQ modules and 2x4 loudspeaker processing
LOUDSPEAKER PROCESSOR MODE: 4x8 loudspeaker processing

Each insert EQ can be assigned to any of the input channels, Aux sends, or Mains for flexible routing and setup..

Ideal Graphic EQ™
This is a super-charged 1/3-octave graphic EQ module that provides a strong advantage over traditional analog (and digital) graphic EQs. By using “raised cosine” algorithms, which offer tighter filter control (and therefore no leak into adjacent filter bands), the Ideal Graphic EQ™ yields a frequency response that truly matches the curve established with the familiar visual interface. In layman’s terms, it’s the Ideal Graphic EQ™.

Lake Mesa Quad EQ™
In addition to classic shelving and parametric filters, Lake Mesa Quad EQ™ offers asymmetric filtering for independent control over the upward and downward slopes of a parametric section. This is particularly useful when performing corrective adjustments to the asymmetric response patterns of all loudspeakers. You can change center frequencies and adjust slopes independently for greater precision and more effective EQ wherever it is used.

Full-Featured Loudspeaker Processor
The LP48 can be configured to provide a full-featured loudspeaker processor with up to 4 inputs and 8 outputs. It offers 2-, 3- and 4-way crossover modules complete with input/output delay functionality for time alignment of delay stacks and drivers. It also features the acclaimed "LimiterMax" Loudspeaker Protection System; when configured correctly, you simply can't clip the amplifier, even if the input is driven into overload. The 8 available outputs of the LP48 card can be assigned to the outputs of the TT24 and DS3232. We have developed a full library of EAW and Mackie presets for quick and easy system configuration. That includes EAW's KF, AX and FR series of professional loudspeakers and Mackie's S200 and S400 series passive loudspeakers. The Loudspeaker Processor seamlessly integrates with the TT Control Software to deliver a powerful and convenient means of controlling your entire PA and/or monitoring system. The LP48 brings Dolby Laboratories' next-generation loudspeaker processing, limiting, and EQ algorithms to the TT24, making it the most powerful and complete solution available for modern sound reinforcement applications.

JBL Creature III

JBL Creature III speakers are available in shops

The Creature III are the new version of a kit at 2.1 audio PC look very special.
The JBL Creature III are enclosures for PCs that rely mainly on their looks from elsewhere, while providing a suitable power of 25 watts RMS.
The Harman International includes many specialist manufacturers of hi -fi as Infinity, Becker, JBL and Harman Kardon. Known for its iPod speaker system (Duet 200 and On Time 200D), the latter manufacturer today announced the Creature III.
If the information is fairly minimal at the moment , the look of this kit 2.1 is quite special. The subwoofer also called Magnum probably a connotation of power, and the two satellites in the form, to say the least original dome resting on four legs.JBL-Creature-III
The advertised power is 25 watts for the whole kit : 5 watts RMS per satellite and 15 watts for the subwoofer. Nothing to clink glasses in the cupboard, but how effectively sound to your games , movies and MP3 . Gadget , the Creature III fly through small hover buttons. For those who would wonder then what distinguishes this third generation of speakers, JBL would be after the power (24 watts on the Creature II) and the frequency range that is here from 50 Hz to 20 kHz for better sound reproduction.
The JBL Creature III are already available at 99 euros.

Earplug Reviews

As an audio enthusiast, there is one truly invaluable instrument that you need to care about: your hearing! The continuous exposure to loud sounds over an extended period of time will result in temporary hearing loss, possibly accompanied by tinnitus, a ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the ears or head. Both may become permanent over successive exposures. If you frequently attend loud concerts, you should consider hearing protection. Perfect hearing extends to frequencies up to 20kHz. Check your audible range here.

This section reviews various earplugs with different situations in mind, from sleeping in silence to protecting your hearing during loud concerts. Each review comes with a simulation that lets you hear the attenuation provided by a given earplug in a particular sonic environment: your partner's snoring, the party next door, a motorcycle engine, the constant rumble of a plane, the painful noise of a circular saw or hammer drill, the impact noise of a gun shot and - of most interest for our "audiocheck" readers - the sound of a club or a loud rock concert!
